Demanding? Not with the EasyScan+ from LuxScan!

Luxscan has recently successfully completed a challenging project at Stora Enso, Ala Sawmill in Ljusne/SE. The timber company put in operation a new line for window component production. To control the quality of the manufactured product, Stora Enso relies on an EasyScan+ scanner delivered by Luxscan, Foetz/ LU, a Weinig Group company. “What set the implementation of this project apart was that the scanner had to process a semi-finished product (glued laminated) instead of conventional solid wood”, explains Benoît Kimplaire, Luxscan Sales Manager for Scandinavia.

Special requirements

Luxscan had to meet several customer requirements. The scanner had to be able to process L-profiled glulam while guaranteeing the perfect final quality of the end product. After scanning there is no further quality control. The products manufactured by Stora Enso are sent directly to their customers. To explain the complex requirements, Kimplaire adds: “At Stora Enso glued laminated wood pieces must be cut according to a specific cutting diagram, as long as the quality complies with the specifications defined by the customer. Otherwise, the system recalculates an alternative cutting pattern in real time. That's why we had to develop a specific software for this particular requirement.”

The EasyScan+ must detect natural softwood characteristics, such as knots, piths, cracks or resin pockets, as well as lack of material and open joints from an incorrect finger jointing process. The latter concerns any damaged finger joints or open seams. “These specific characteristics or production defects are difficult to recognize, especially in a multi-layer glued products”, says Kimplaire. The EasyScan+ can detect all the required features on four sides using laser and colour cameras as well as dot and scatter lasers. The feed speed goes up to 120 m/min.

Reliable scanning solution

The EasyScan+ from Luxscan and the OptiCut cross-cut system from Dimter are ideal for integration into any highly automated timber production line. Stora Enso’s line is supplemented by a set of robots for wood stacking. "It is a complex task. But we were able to achieve a smooth and a tailor-made solution, including the development of a special software," says Luxscan's Sales Manager. "The EasyScan+ is our mid-range scanning solution; however, with this installation we have proven how adaptable and cost-effective this product is. We have customized the scanner exactly to the customer’s needs."

“The main reason why we chose Luxscan was the good scanning performance, good reputation and the service they offer. The installation was also efficient and quick and was an important part of the entire investment” says Mr Rosen, the sawmill manager.

Sweden is a growing market for Luxscan. More and more inquiries are coming through Sågspecialisten, the local Weinig agent, who supports end customers, such as Stora Enso, from the project definition to the project execution.

“With this project, our EasyScan+ scanner demonstrates its ability to scan laminated pieces, with cross sections of various shapes. We thank Stora Enso company for this fruitful cooperation”, says Dr Raphaël Vogrig, founder of Luxscan Technologies.
